How Spinal Decompression Therapy Works

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical treatment that gently stretches the spine to relieve pressure on compressed discs and pinched nerves. At Citrin Chiropractic Center, we are one of the few clinics in the St. Louis area equipped with a dedicated spinal decompression table.

How It Works

During treatment, you lie comfortably on a motorized decompression table. The table uses computer-controlled traction to create negative pressure within the spinal disc. This negative pressure does two things: it pulls the herniated or bulging disc material back into position, and it promotes the flow of nutrients and oxygen into the disc to accelerate healing.

What Conditions Does It Treat?

Spinal decompression is highly effective for herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, and chronic neck or back pain. It is especially beneficial for patients who want to avoid surgery or who have not responded well to other conservative treatments.

What to Expect During Treatment

Each session lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Most patients feel a gentle stretching sensation but no pain. A typical treatment plan involves 15 to 20 sessions over 4 to 6 weeks. Many patients report significant improvement after just 4 to 6 sessions.
