What Are K-Taping & Trigger Point Therapy?

Kinesiology taping (K-taping) and trigger point therapy are specialized techniques used to support injured muscles and joints, reduce pain, and accelerate recovery. While they are distinct treatments, they work exceptionally well together as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

K-Taping: K-tape is a flexible, adhesive tape applied along muscles and joints to provide support without restricting movement. It gently lifts the skin to improve blood flow, reduce swelling, and provide proprioceptive feedback that helps your body heal. K-tape stays on for 3–5 days, providing continuous support between clinic visits.

Trigger Point Therapy: Trigger points are specific knots in muscles that refer pain to other areas of the body. By applying sustained pressure to these points for 30–90 seconds, our doctors and therapists release the knots, restore blood flow, and eliminate referred pain patterns that can affect seemingly unrelated body parts.

  • K-tape provides 24/7 muscle support between appointments
  • Trigger point therapy eliminates referred pain patterns
  • Non-invasive, drug-free pain management
  • Reduces swelling and improves circulation
  • Complements adjustments, massage, and rehab

24/7 Muscle Support Between Appointments

K-tape provides continuous support even while you sleep. Once applied, it works around the clock for 3–5 days — lifting the skin to improve circulation, reducing swelling, and providing the proprioceptive feedback your muscles need to heal properly.

Combined with trigger point therapy that releases painful muscle knots, these techniques extend the benefits of your in-clinic treatment to every hour between visits.

Conditions We Treat

Conditions These Techniques Address

K-taping and trigger point therapy are effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions involving muscle and joint dysfunction.

🔶

Muscle Spasms & Knots

Trigger point therapy directly releases the painful muscle knots that cause spasms, tightness, and referred pain to other areas of your body.

🔶

Referred Pain Patterns

Trigger points in one muscle can cause pain in seemingly unrelated areas. Targeted pressure eliminates these referred pain patterns at their source.

🔶

Joint Instability

K-tape provides structural support to unstable joints without restricting movement, helping protect vulnerable areas during the healing process.

🔶

Swelling & Inflammation

K-tape lifts the skin to improve lymphatic drainage and blood flow, reducing swelling and inflammation at the injury site.

🔶

Sports Injuries

Athletes benefit from both K-taping (for support during activity) and trigger point therapy (for releasing overworked muscles and preventing injury).

🔶

Auto Accident Soft Tissue Injuries

After a car accident, K-taping supports damaged muscles while trigger point therapy addresses the knots and spasms caused by impact forces.

Your Treatment Plan

What to Expect

K-taping and trigger point therapy are quick, effective treatments often performed as part of your regular appointment.

1

Assessment

Our doctors identify active trigger points through palpation and assess which muscles and joints would benefit from K-tape support.

2

Trigger Point Release

Sustained pressure is applied to each muscle knot for 30–90 seconds per point, releasing the tension and restoring normal blood flow to the area.

3

K-Tape Application

Kinesiology tape is carefully applied along the affected muscles and joints, providing support, improving circulation, and reducing swelling.

4

Duration

K-tape stays on for 3–5 days, providing continuous muscle support between clinic visits — even while you shower, sleep, and go about your day.

FAQ

Common Questions About K-Taping & Trigger Point Therapy

Curious about how K-tape works or whether trigger point therapy is painful? We’re here to answer your questions.

Call (314) 890-2400
Does trigger point therapy hurt?

You may feel some discomfort when pressure is applied to an active trigger point — this is often described as a “good pain” or a sensation of pressure and release. The discomfort is brief (30–90 seconds per point) and is followed by noticeable relief as the muscle knot releases. Our doctors and therapists always work within your comfort level.

How long does K-tape stay on?

K-tape typically stays on for 3–5 days. It is designed to be worn continuously during this time, including during showers, exercise, and sleep. The tape is water-resistant and flexible, so it moves with your body naturally. When it’s time to remove it, gently peel it off in the direction of hair growth.

Can I shower with K-tape?

Yes. K-tape is water-resistant and designed to stay on during showering, swimming, and sweating. After getting wet, simply pat the tape dry with a towel. Avoid rubbing the tape vigorously, as this can cause it to peel at the edges. The adhesive is hypoallergenic and designed for extended wear.

Is K-taping covered by insurance?

K-taping is often covered when it is part of a prescribed treatment plan for an injury. Auto insurance (MedPay/PIP) typically covers K-taping for car accident injuries. Our office verifies your insurance coverage and handles all billing, so you’ll know what to expect before treatment begins.

What conditions benefit from trigger point therapy?

Trigger point therapy is effective for muscle spasms, chronic tension, headaches (when caused by muscle tension in the neck and shoulders), referred pain patterns, myofascial pain syndrome, and soft tissue injuries from auto accidents or sports. It is particularly useful when you have pain that seems to come from a different area than where the actual problem is located.
