What Are Chiropractic Adjustments?

Chiropractic adjustments — also called spinal manipulation — are the cornerstone of chiropractic care. Our doctors use precise, controlled force to restore proper alignment of vertebrae that have shifted due to injury, poor posture, or degeneration.

When vertebrae are misaligned (subluxated), they can compress nerves, restrict movement, and cause pain throughout the body. Adjustments restore proper spinal mechanics, relieve nerve pressure, and allow the body to heal naturally without drugs or surgery.

Our doctors use multiple techniques including Diversified, Thompson Drop, and Activator methods — selecting the approach best suited to each patient’s condition, comfort level, and stage of recovery.

  • Restores proper spinal alignment and joint mechanics
  • Relieves nerve compression and referred pain
  • Improves range of motion and flexibility
  • Multiple technique options for patient comfort
  • Low-force techniques available for acute injuries

Low-Force Techniques for Acute Injuries

Our doctors use gentle, low-force techniques for patients with acute injuries — no aggressive twisting or cracking during early recovery. As you heal and your body responds, we can adjust the technique and intensity accordingly.

Whether you prefer a traditional manual adjustment or a gentler instrument-assisted approach, we tailor the method to your needs and comfort.

Conditions We Treat

Conditions Chiropractic Adjustments Address

Chiropractic adjustments are effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, from acute injuries to chronic pain.

🔶

Spinal Misalignment

Vertebral subluxations disrupt nerve function and cause pain. Precise adjustments restore proper alignment and allow the nervous system to function optimally.

🔶

Auto Accident Injuries

The sudden forces of a car accident commonly cause spinal misalignments. Adjustments are a critical part of post-accident recovery and rehabilitation.

🔶

Neck & Back Pain

Whether caused by injury, poor posture, or degeneration, adjustments address the structural root cause of neck and back pain rather than masking symptoms.

🔶

Headaches & Migraines

Many headaches originate from tension and misalignment in the cervical spine. Adjustments to the upper neck often provide significant relief from chronic headaches.

🔶

Reduced Range of Motion

Stiff, restricted joints limit your mobility and quality of life. Adjustments restore proper joint mechanics, improving flexibility and movement.

🔶

Joint Stiffness

Whether in the spine, shoulders, hips, or extremities, adjustments break up adhesions and restore fluid movement to stiff, painful joints.

Your Treatment Plan

What to Expect

Your first adjustment appointment includes a thorough evaluation to ensure we use the right technique for your specific condition.

1

Examination

Palpation, range of motion testing, and X-rays if needed to identify misalignments and determine the best adjustment approach for your condition.

2

Preparation

You’ll be positioned comfortably on the adjustment table. Our doctors explain each step before proceeding so you know exactly what to expect.

3

Adjustment

Precise, controlled force is applied to the targeted vertebrae. You may hear a “pop” — this is normal joint cavitation and is completely harmless.

4

Follow-Up

Post-adjustment assessment to evaluate your response, along with home care instructions and scheduling for your next visit as needed.

FAQ

Common Questions About Chiropractic Adjustments

Curious about what an adjustment feels like? Wondering if it’s right for you? We’re here to answer all your questions.

Call (314) 890-2400
Does the adjustment hurt?

Most patients experience little to no discomfort during an adjustment. You may feel mild pressure as the doctor applies force to the targeted area. For patients with acute injuries, our doctors use low-force techniques that are gentle and comfortable. After the adjustment, some patients feel mild soreness similar to what you might feel after exercise — this typically resolves within 24 hours.

What is the popping sound?

The popping or cracking sound you may hear during an adjustment is called joint cavitation. It’s the release of gas bubbles from the synovial fluid within the joint — similar to cracking your knuckles. It is completely harmless and does not indicate that anything is breaking or being damaged. Not all adjustments produce this sound, and its presence or absence has no bearing on the effectiveness of the treatment.

How often do I need adjustments?

The frequency of adjustments depends on your condition, severity, and how your body responds to treatment. For acute injuries like auto accidents, patients may need 2–3 adjustments per week initially, tapering as symptoms improve. For maintenance care, many patients come in monthly. Our doctors will create a personalized treatment schedule based on your specific needs.

Is it safe after a car accident?

Yes. Chiropractic adjustments are not only safe after a car accident — they are one of the most effective treatments for accident-related spinal injuries. Our doctors are experienced in treating post-accident patients and use appropriate techniques based on the severity and stage of your injury. We always perform a thorough evaluation before any adjustment.

Do you use different techniques for different conditions?

Absolutely. Our doctors are proficient in multiple adjustment techniques, including Diversified (traditional manual adjustments), Thompson Drop (using a specialized drop table), and Activator (a low-force instrument-assisted method). The technique selected depends on your condition, pain level, preference, and stage of recovery. We always choose the approach that is safest and most effective for you.
