Back Pain After a Car Accident: Why You Should Not Wait

By citrinadmin · · 3 min read

A car accident can rattle your spine harder than you realize. The forces in a 25 mph rear-end collision can equal hundreds of pounds of pressure on your lumbar spine in a fraction of a second. The result is often back pain that surfaces hours, sometimes days, after the crash — and patients who wait often pay for that delay both physically and financially.

At Citrin Chiropractic Center, we have treated back-pain patients from car accidents for nearly 50 years. The pattern is remarkably consistent: the longer you wait, the harder the recovery. Here is why.

Why Back Pain Often Shows Up Days Later

In the moments after a crash, your body floods with adrenaline. Pain receptors are temporarily suppressed, your heart rate spikes, and you feel “fine.” Many patients exchange information at the scene, drive home, and only realize something is wrong when they wake up the next morning unable to bend over.

What is actually happening: spinal discs, ligaments, and small joints absorbed shock during the crash. Microscopic injuries take 12 to 72 hours to inflame, swell, and start sending pain signals. By that time, the easy window to document the injury for insurance has narrowed, and tissues have started to scar improperly without proper care.

Common Back Injuries from Car Accidents

  • Lumbar strains and sprains — overstretched muscles and ligaments, the most common accident injury
  • Herniated or bulging discs — when the soft inner disc pushes outward and presses on a nerve, often causing radiating leg pain
  • Facet joint injuries — small spinal joints that can lock up after impact
  • Compression fractures — more common in older patients or high-impact crashes
  • Sciatica — nerve pain shooting down one leg, usually from a disc issue
  • Whiplash-associated disorder — neck-and-back combination injury we see in nearly all rear-end crashes

Even minor crashes routinely cause significant back injuries. We have treated patients from “fender benders” with confirmed disc bulges on MRI. Auto accident injuries do not always match the visible damage to the car.

Why Painkillers Alone Are Not Enough

It is tempting to take ibuprofen, rest a few days, and hope the pain passes. Unfortunately, painkillers mask pain — they do not heal the underlying joint dysfunction, disc injury, or muscle imbalance. When the medication wears off, the original problem is still there, often worse, because untreated injuries scar improperly and create chronic pain patterns.

Chiropractic care addresses the actual mechanical problem. Adjustments restore joint motion, reduce inflammation, and let damaged tissues heal in proper alignment. For more severe disc injuries, we add spinal decompression therapy to relieve nerve pressure non-surgically.

What Treatment Looks Like at Citrin

Your first visit is comprehensive: history, neurological exam, orthopedic testing, and imaging when indicated. We document everything carefully — both for your treatment plan and for your insurance claim. From there, your treatment typically involves:

  • Specific spinal adjustments to restore joint motion
  • Soft tissue therapy and trigger point work
  • Spinal decompression for disc-related pain
  • Targeted rehabilitation exercises to rebuild stability
  • Heat, ice, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation as appropriate

Most patients are seen 2 to 3 times per week early in care, tapering to once a week as the spine stabilizes. A typical course of care for moderate accident injuries runs 6 to 12 weeks.

Insurance, Documentation, and Your Claim

Back pain that goes undocumented in the first weeks after a crash becomes very hard to attribute to the accident later. Insurance adjusters and defense attorneys will argue the pain is unrelated. We protect against that by establishing a complete medical record from your first visit and by coordinating directly with your auto insurance, MedPay, or PIP coverage. If you are working with a personal injury attorney, we provide the documentation and reports they need.

Why You Should Not Wait

Back pain after a car accident is not something to “tough out.” Every day untreated is a day damaged tissue heals incorrectly. Adjustments, decompression, and rehab become harder and longer the more time passes. Insurance windows close. Pain patterns become chronic. Get evaluated within 72 hours, even if the pain seems mild — your future self will thank you.
